Balloon Facility Is Filled With Hot Air
Published Dec 15, 2008

Balloons aren’t just for kids.

NASA operates the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Anderson County, and balloons on site measure as large as 300 feet in diameter. The facility in Palestine periodically launches the unmanned balloons to conduct studies of the upper atmosphere and outer space.

The Physical Science Lab of New Mexico State University manages the CSBF, and visitors are invited to tour the base. Research balloons for scientific experiments can reach heights of 120,000 feet. Learn more about the facility at www.csbf.nasa.gov.
